Under €1,000 you can buy a proper mechanical watch from a brand with decades of history: a movement that winds itself as you wear it, a sapphire or hardened crystal, and a case that will survive daily wear. What to look for in an automatic watch at this price

• Power reserve: how long the watch runs off the wrist. Around 40 hours is typical; 80 hours means it survives a weekend on the dresser.

• Water resistance: 100 m is enough for swimming; 200 m and a screw-down crown make a watch ready for the sea.
• Case size: 38 to 40 mm suits most wrists; check the lug-to-lug length if your wrist is slim.

The PRX is the watch that made integrated bracelets affordable. The design goes back to a slim Tissot quartz watch from 1978; the automatic Powermatic 80 version arrived in 2021. Seiko builds its own movements in Japan, which is why the prices stay low for what you get. The Seiko 5 Sports line is the everyday choice: day-date display, 100 m water resistance and a case that shrugs off knocks. Presage is the dressier side, known for its Cocktail Time dials with deep textures and sunburst finishes. Both use in-house automatic calibres that can also be wound by hand.
